Cycle is the all-in-one billing engine for complex pricing. We represent your pricing as a directed graph, and we derive billing from it, enabling you to represent any complex pricing scenario with ease.
Why are we building it?
Every company I have worked for has struggled with billing.
We would start out with simple Stripe subscriptions and some glue code. As we started to make more money, the complexity grew. New plans, usage-based pricing, grandfathered plans, and upgrading subscriptions all layered complexity on top of each other.
At my last company, it took us almost a month of company-wide development effort to implement and roll out promo codes.
After a brief stint working on accounting systems and building ERPs, I came across billing again.
I started experimenting with implementing different pricing models and payment schedules in existing billing platforms, only for them to not support the pricing model, require external platforms for entitlements and usage billing, or required customizing their source code.
This made me realize that billing was fundamentally broken and we needed something new.
What problem are we solving?
Billing is hard. You are stuck between stitching together inflexible platforms that don't support your pricing, customizing open-source platforms, or building it in-house.
We are building an all-in-one platform for billing, where you can represent your pricing as a graph and derive subscriptions, usage, and entitlements from it. This enables us to represent vastly different billing shapes (SaaS and enterprise) in one easy-to-integrate platform.
Once you have everything set up, billing can be easily changed and experimented on by products and sales without any effort from developers.
Why hasn't billing been solved till now?
Billing has been around far longer than computers and software.
The reason is that billing is still complex is because there is no common shape of billing. Two customers inside a company subscribed to the same plan might have different billing requirements.
All our existing competitors try to fit your differentiated billing into their rigid data models.
You could try building it in-house for maximum flexibility and it might work for some time, but sooner or later, you will be trying to convince developers who hate working on billing to work on a tangled mess of billing code to experiment with new pricing models.
We are rebuilding billing from the ground up as a graph. This enables us to be flexible, have different billing shapes (e.g., for solo users and teams), and support enterprise contracts.
We are also building everything required for billing into a single platform, so you can have real-time usage and credit balance checks, payment collection, revenue recognition and accounting automation without external vendors.
Because we are built on a flexible foundation, we can serve you all the way from your first invoice to enterprise-level contracts.
Billing has been broken for so long, and we are fixing it with Cycle.
